What if the suspects does not show up?

In the Dutch legal system, it is possible to prosecute suspects in their absence. This means that the case is heard without the suspects being present. This is only possible if the suspects are aware that there is a trial, that they can appear before a court and they choose not to appear and not to be represented by a lawyer. Suspects can, for example, also be sentenced or acquitted in absentia.
